Boys finish 4th; Girls 13th at State XC Championships

Your boys and girls cross country teams ended their season this past weekend at the U.I.L. Cross Country Championships in Round Rock. This was the sixth time in the last seven years that both teams competed at the state meet in the same season.

In the girls race, senior Chloe Smith led the way for the Lady Wolverines by placing 16 in the team scores with a time of 19:02.00 while senior Cori Cochran finished 61st with a 19:52.62. Sophomore Ava Yocum was the next teammate to cross the line at 20:11.78 for 72nd. Sophomore Madelyn Schroeder and freshmen Rebekah Gould were the next to cross at 74th and 82nd. Madie went 20:13.33 and Bekah at 20:31.22. Sophomore Lola Smith and junior Emma Thomas were the two remaining members to finish at 21:32 and 21:59. The team combined for 301 points for 13th place. In a post race interview to Running Quarterly, Coach Braegan Enright remarked "very proud of these young ladies, we gave it all we had against the best the state has to offer."

In the boys race, senior Nati Enright continued his legacy as one of the fastest cross country runners that has come through Wakeland thus far. He finished 5th overall with a 15:24.32 and ties Nick Hendrix (finished 5th in '17) with the best finish for a boy runner in school history. Nati also earned All-State honors with his Top 10 finish. Senior Hayden Coghlan rides off into the sunset in his last race with a new PR of 16:17.98 for 23rd in the team scores. Sophomore Lukas Vetkoetter thought he was swimming laps in the pool because he waked a new personal best of 16:22.32 for 25th. Seniors David Corujo and Jack Winne were the last two scoring members to cross at 17:00.00 and 17:05.65. David was 54th and Jack 60th. The team scored 166 points for 4th place in the team standings, just missing the podium. Sophomore Thomas Hayes and senior Zachary Barisa were your sixth and seventh team members at 17:46.11 and 17:49.22. In a post meet questioning by the Austin Daily Gazette, Coach Tidwell commented "we had some great performances today and very proud of the fact that we can call ourselves the 4th best team in the state."

For both teams, they continued to make Frisco ISD XC history by sending both teams to the state meet for the sixth time in the last seven years. For the girls, what a memorable season by defending their district title for the 4th year in a row. For the boys, it was great to advance to Regionals for the 12th year in a row and qualify for the state meet for the 9th time in the last 10 years. Although, the Wolverines will graduate some very fast seniors, the future is still very bright for the Wolverines in 2022!

Once again, a huge THANKS our wonderful team mom's, the support of our parents, administration and the hard work of all these runners! Another shout out goes to all of the runners/teams in Frisco ISD and Region II that showed the rest of the state where the most competitive distance running takes place.

Both boys and girls headed back to State!

Your Wakeland Wolverines are headed back to the State XC Championships! The girls placed 4th and the boy's placed 2nd at the Region II XC Championships this past Tuesday at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie. 

In the 5A girls' race, senior Chloe Smith led the team with a 7th place finish with a time of 19:09.4, which earned her All-Region II honors for the fourth year in a row! Senior Cori Cochran was the next Wolverine to cross at 20:23.51 for 32nd place. Sophomore Madelyn Schroeder and junior Emma Thomas were just separated by an opponent between them. Madelyn finished 42nd at 20:49.76 and Emma at 20:51.58 for 44th. Freshmen Rebekah Gould was the last scoring member who crossed at 21:08.43 for 52nd. Sophomores Lola Smith and Ava Yocum were the last two members to cross for 67th and 104th. 

This group scored 154 points for the fourth and final spot. This is the girls sixth year in a row to advance to the state meet.

In the 5A boys' race, senior Nati Enright did what he did best! He ran really fast and won the race! It was the first time in our programs history that a boy runner was crowed Regional Champion in cross country, and this was his 5th win on the season! In addition, he earned All-Region II honors with his first-place finish at 15:36.41. In addition, senior David Corujo earned All-Region II honors by placing 13th overall with a time of 16:38.50. Senior Hayden Coghlan wasn't too far behind him with a Top 20 finish at a 16:58.58. Sophomores Lukas Vetkoetter and Thomas Hayes were your two remaining scorers to secure the 2nd place team finish. Lukas finished at 17:07.29 for 28th and Thomas at 48th for a 17:37.28. Seniors Jack Winne and Zachary Barisa were the remaining teammates to cross at 61st and 83rd. This group combined for 98 points and earned Region II runner-up. This is the boy's 9th trip to Round Rock in the last ten years.

The Wolverines will compete in the 5A State XC Championships next Friday, Nov. 5th at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. The girls will run at 11:30am and the boys will follow at 12:10pm. Go orange and blue!

Wolverines miss out on District sweep by 1 point

Your Wakeland cross country teams went into the District XC Championships this past Friday with the intention of making a clean sweep of the competition. Although they didn't claim all four titles that were on the line, they came close with three championships. It was only a 1pt margin that kept the Wolverines from sweeping the District for the third time in the last four years. 

The Varsity girls led off the meet with hopes of clinching their fourth consecutive district title and they didn't disappoint. Senior Chloe Smith led the Lady Wolverines by placing 2nd overall in the race. She along with senior Cori Cochran, sophomore Madelyn Schroeder, and freshmen Rebekah Gould all placed in the Top 10 for All-District honors! Cori placed 7th, Madelyn 8th, and Rebekah 10th! Junior Emma Thomas and sophomore Ava Yocum just missed out on those honors by placing 12th and 18th. Freshmen Grace Coghan was the remaining Wolverine that crossed at 38th. This is the Lady Wolverines 9th time in school history to qualify for the regional meet and the 7th time in the last 8 years. In a post meet interview to Runners Weekly, Coach Braegan Enright stated, "I'm very excited for this group of girls, they've put in a lot of work and we're starting to hit our stride at the right time, pun intended!"

The Varsity boys were looking to reclaim their district title, which was taken by a mere two points the year before by cross town rival, Reedy. In a season that hadn't seen the Lions beat the Wolverines in their previous three meetings, they did on this day by 1 point to earn back to back District Championships and kept the Wolverines from getting their 8th title in the past decade. However, seniors Nati Enright and Hayden Coghlan earned All-District honors by placing in the top 10. Enright placed 1st and was named the Most Valuable Runner for District 9-5A while Coghlan placed 5th. Senior David Corujo, sophomore Lukas Vetkoetter, and senior Jack Winne just missed out on these honors by placing 11th, 14th, 18th. Sophomore Thomas Hayes finished in Top 20 while senior Zachary Barisa finished in the Top 30. 

The JV girls were going for their 7th title in a row and they did it memorable fashion by taking 7 out of the Top 15 spots. It was called the race of the day by some race fans. Sophomore Lola Smith was your District Champion with sophomore Bree Grzywinski  and freshmen Claire Enright not too far behind for 4th and 6th place. Junior Alexa Goldsmith finished 8th while senior Luisa Perez-Bauer placed 10th. Senior McKenna Smith and junior Shea Derheim were the remaining Wolverines to take medals for placing in the Top 15. This group had the lowest score on the day with only 28 points! This is the JV girls 8th title in the past 9 years.

The JV boys were not to be overlooked as being the last race of the day, but as the team that now holds the most district titles in program history. This group was looking to claim their 7th straight title and 9th title overall. When the top 15 runners finished, Wakeland took 7 of those spots. Freshmen Kaison Krembs was your District Champion, sophomore Aiden Maricle was 4th, sophomore Reese Holt 7th, sophomore Mikey Winne 8th, freshmen Britain Chancellor 9th! Freshmen Trenton Hunter 10th,  sophomore Davis Word and freshmen Grayson Sursa were your last two Wolverines to snag a medal for placing in the Top 15! In a post race interview with Mountain Running Magazine, Coach Tidwell remarked, "unbelievable performance by the JV boys once again, this has been a Decade of Distance for this crew!" This is the teams 9th title in the past 10 years.

The Varsity girls and Varsity boys advance to the Region II Meet at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie on Tuesday, Oct. 26th. This is the 9th time in school history that both teams have qualified for the regional meet at the same time. Varsity girls will run at 12pm and the Varsity boys will run at 12:30pm. The girls are looking for their 6th straight state appearance while the boys are looking to get back to the State Meet for the 9th time in the last 10 years. Hope to see you there. Wolverines capture some loot at Wylie Pirate's Dustin Rodriguez Run

Your Wakeland Cross Country teams ended their regular season this past Thursday at the Dustin Rodriguez Run held behind Wylie High School at Founders Park and completed their last tuneup as they get prepare for championship season. 

The Elite Varsity girls started off the morning with 2nd place finish! Senior Chloe Smith led the way by medaling for 3rd with a time of 18:49.90. Senior Cori Cochran and sophomore Madelyn Schroeder were both around the 20 minute time barrier for 11th and 13th. Cochran crossed at 19:54.89 and Schroeder at 20:04.55. Freshmen Rebekah Gould and junior Emma Thomas were your fourth and fifth scoring members to finish at 20:43.23 and 20:53.44. Gould placed 22nd and Thomas 23rd. This group combined for just 72 points and were only 5 points from the winner, 6A Austin Westlake! The Varsity girls are peaking at the right time and will be looking for their fourth consecutive district title this Thursday at the District 9-5A XC Championships.

In the Varsity boys race, senior Nati Enright led the Wolverines by finishing as runner-up with a time of 15:39.11. Senior Hayden Coghlan was the second Wolverine to cross and grab a medal for 10th with a 16:23.44. Senior David Corujo placed 16th with a 16:56.60 and sophomore Lukas Vetkoetter was right behind him for 18th at a 16:59.22! Senior Jack Winne was the last remaining scoring member at 26th with a 17:13.54. The Wolverines only combined for 72 points, which earned them 2nd behind 6A Wylie. The Varsity boys will look to get their District title back from Reedy this upcoming Thursday at the District Meet! 

The second group of Varsity girls were not to be out done by the second place finish of Varsity #1, so they brought home a runner-up trophy as well! They combined for 75 points were just 5 points behind the #1 varsity team of Sachse. Freshmen Grace Coghlan led the way with a 7th place finish at 21:20.11. Sophomore Bree Grzywinski, freshmen Claire Enright and sophomore Lola Smith all finished as a pack for 13th, 14th, and 18th. Bree crossed at 21:50.22, Claire at 21:54.00 and Lola at 22:06.82 Junior Shea Derheim was the last member at 23rd with a time of 22:31.11.

The second group of Varsity boys captured a 6th place finish with 127 points just 4 points from 5th place behind the number one team of 6A Mesquite Horn. Sophomore Mikey Winne led this team with a 20th place finish at 18:40.11 with sophomore Reese Holt right behind him for 23rd with an 18:45.33. Sophomore Aiden Maricle and sophomore Bryce Yong were the next two to cross at 25th and 27th. Maricle ran an 18:51.11 and Yong an 18:53.44. Sophomore Ethan Sickler was the last scoring member at 32nd with a time of 18:57.22.

The JV girls finished 2nd overall as well with a point total of 44 just 10 points behind 6A Denton Guyer. Junior Minami Krembs led this group by finishing 2nd overall with a time of 23:07.22 with sophomore Olivia Wang just behind her for 6th with a 23:19.99. Junior Hemma Kakel crossed the line right behind her for 8th place at a 24:02.22. Freshmen Ava Stoneman and Maggie Meares were last scoring members. They finished 13th and 15th with a 24:24.44 and 24:28.97. This group along with some members from Varsity #1 and #2 will combine for one large JV team and look to capture their 7th straight district title and 8th title in the last 9 years.

The JV boys ended their regular season with a 142 point performance for a 6th place finish. Senior Zachary Smullen led the way for this group and just missed out on a medal by placing 21st with a 20:33.44. Freshmen Braylon Norton was next to cross for 23rd at a 20:40.11. Sophomores Keegan King and Kaden Bailey were the next duo to toe the line at 27th and 33rd. King ran a 21:09.22 and Bailey a 21:23.33. Freshmen Luke Mittelstet was the last scoring member that finished 38th with a time of 21:45.00. The goal for this group of young men along with some members of Varsity #1 and #2 is to win their 7th consecutive district championship and 8th district championship in 9 years as well. In a post race interview to Runners Around the World, Coach Braegan commented "I call this group the sophomore sensations!"

Wakeland will look to sweep each division at the District Meet this upcoming Thursday, Oct. 14th at Warren Park after barely missing that goal last year by just two points. We hope you can make it out, so you can cheer for the orange and blue!

Enright goes for the win at Lynn Creek Park

Your Runnin' Wolverines got a chance to preview what will be their Regional course in a few weeks at the Ken Gaston XC Invitational this past Thursday at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie. In what started off as a cool overcast morning off the beautiful shorelines off Joe Pool Lake turned hot and humid after the first few races. However, that didn't stop Wakeland from bringing home some hardware!

The Elite Varsity girls started off the morning by placing third. Senior Chloe Smith  was close to the 19 minute barrier with a 19:12.61 and finished 3rd overall. Sophomore Madelyn Schroeder finished 14th overall with a 20:05.00 while senior Cori Cochran crossed at 20:20.01 for 17th. Junior Emma Thomas and freshmen Rebekah Gould were your final two scoring members of the team. Emma finished 18th with a 20:25.10 and Gould was right behind her for 19th at a 20:27.11. This team combined for 71 points and was just 15 points behind Hallsville and Arlington Martin.

The Elite Varsity boys were next up and senior Nati Enright was the first Wolverine to cross the finish line for his second 1st place finish in as many meets! Nati also set a new course record with a blistering time of 15:41.90. Seniors David Corujo and Hayden Coghlan both finished in the Top 10 with a 4th and 8th place finish. David crossed at 16:30.62 and Hayden at 16:46.12. Sophomore Lukas Vetkoetter was next with a 17:05.63 for 13th while sophomore Thomas Hayes was the last scoring member at 17:38.42 for 23rd. This team combined for only 49 points for a 2nd place finish. Wakeland was just 4 points behind winner 6A Arlington Sam Houston. 

The second varsity girls were next on the schedule and were led by sophomore Lillie Grace Moncrief with a Top 20 finish. Moncrief finished 19th overall for a 21:30.65. Senior Luisa Perez-Bauer was next to cross the line with a 22:04.11 for 36th. Freshmen Grace Coghlan and Claire Enright were the next teammates to finish at 42nd and 47th. Coghlan ran a 22:13.92 and Enright a 22:23.90. Sophomore Bree Grzywinski was the last remaining member at 48th with a time of 22:36.55. This team scored 192 points for 6th place in a race dominated by a lot of 5A-6A schools first varsity teams.

The second varsity boys followed by scoring 138 points for a 3rd place. Freshmen Kaison Krembs ran a personal best and was the lone medalist on this team with a 17:45.12 for 9th place. Sophomore Reese Holt just missed out on a medal with his 22nd place finish. He ran an 18:14.42. Freshmen Grayson Sursa was just behind him for 27th place with an 18:20.21. Freshmen Trenton Hunter and sophomore Mikey Winne were the last two scoring members to cross at 18:27.82 and 18:33.61. Hunter was 33rd while Winne was 44th. This team was only 18 points behind Independence's first varsity.  

The JV girls were the second Wakeland team on the day to bring back some hardware! They finished 2nd with only 75 points. Junior Shea Derheim led this group with a 22.24.89 for 5th overall. Freshmen Kalli Frasier was right behind her for 8th with a time of 22:32.90. Senior McKenna Smith and sophomore Elena Clark both finished in the Top 20. Smith crossed at 23:05.12 for 18th while Clark scored 20 points with a 23:10.11. Freshmen Taylor Phan just missed out on a medal with a 24th place finish with a 23:21.33. 

The JV boys ended the day by placing 2nd as well with 79 points. Sophomores Chase Yong, Davis Word and Aiden Maricle led the way and all medaled with 11th, 13th, and 16th place finishes. Yong crossed at 18:47.82, Word at 18:55.62, and Maricle at 19:07.22.  Junior Tristan Mauboussin and sophomore Bryce Yong were the last two scorers for the team at 17th and 22nd. The closest district opponent in this division was Lone Start with 303 points.

Another huge THANK YOU goes out to our team mom's, our parents, and fans for coming out to support these runners. Wakeland will be back in action next Thursday, Oct. 7th at the Dustin Rodriguez Run at Founders Park in Wylie. Go orange and blue!

Nati goes for gold and sets new course record!

Enright and Varsity Boys defend the den at Warren Park

The Wakeland Cross Country teams capped off the first part of their season this past Saturday at the 38th annual Frisco ISD XC Invitational held in the beautiful confines of Warren Park. 

The Varsity girls kicked things off by placing 3rd as a team with 118 points. Senior Chloe Smith was the first Lady Wolverine to cross the line at 3rd place with an 18:32.22 with senior Cori Cochran finishing not too far behind for 14th at a 19:32.92. Sophomore Madelyn Schroeder was next for 26th and freshmen Rebekah Gould came in just a few spots behind at 31st. Madelyn crossed at 19:53.00 and Rebekah at 20:14.72. Sophomore Lola Smith was the final scoring member for 45th with a 20:58.22. Wakeland finished behind 6A Flower Mound and regional rival Highland Park.

Next on the schedule was the Varsity boys and they didn't disappoint as they looked to defend their den at Warren Park. They did just that with senior Nati Enright taking control of the race in the last 400 meters of the race after shouts of historical facts from course monitor #27 (Mr. John Laine), which helped Enright find his second wind to get away from him as fast as possible. Nati outkicked the competitor from Little Elm for the "W" with a blistering time of 15:14.82. Senior Hayden Coghlan also grabbed a medal by finishing 11th with a time of 16:15.83. Sophomore Lukas Vetkoetter and freshmen Britain Chancellor just missed out on Top 20 honors by placing 22nd and 24th. Lukas ran a 16:35.62 and Britain a 16:40.21. Senior Jack Winne was the final scoring member at 16:57.33 for 37th place. This is the fourth time in school history that the varsity boys won the Frisco ISD Invitational. 

The JV girls had another strong showing with a fourth place finish in their division just behind Reedy, Flower Mound, and Highland Park. Senior Katie Clark led this group by taking the last medal at 20th place. She ran a 22:24.00. Freshmen Avery Alonso was just behind her with a time of 22:31.01 for 21st place. Sophomores Minami Krembs and Kalli Frasier went 29th and 30th with times of 22:44.40 and 22:44.79. The last scoring member was Shea Derheim at 22:45.21 for 32nd. 

The JV boys finished off the morning with a 5th place finish with a combined score of 91 points. Freshmen Grayson Sursa led the way by medalling with a 7th place finish at 18:10.41. Sophomore Mikey Winne wasn't too far behind with a 10th place finish with a time of 18:22.72. Freshmen John Lensmeyer was next at a 18:59.32 for 22nd place. Sophomores Ethan Sickler and Jackson Nodes were your last two members at at 24th and 29th. Sickler ran a 19:03.90 and Nodes a 19:16.22.

Your running Wolverines will take this week off from racing and focus on training as they start approaching championship season in the next three weeks with the District 9-5A meet just a little over three weeks away. Wakeland will be back in action next Thursday, September 30th at the Ken Gaston Invitational at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie. Go orange and Blue!
